A horse-drawn carriage fills the foreground of this stereograph, which looks east across the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. Stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers in the 1860s, and viewed through a stereoscope they gave parlor audiences a convincing sense of depth. The Capitol was still being enlarged and its cast-iron dome was nearing completion when this view was made around 1866, so the scene captures a building in transition. The card carries a copyright notice in the name of G.D. Wakely, a Washington photographer whose views of the city circulated widely.
