An open book set between two cannons is a design that recurs across the Gettysburg battlefield, where states and veterans' groups raised hundreds of memorials to mark where their units fought. The book usually carries inscriptions recording a regiment's service, and the cannons recall the artillery that fired across these fields during three days in July 1863. Many of these stones were dedicated at anniversary reunions, when aging veterans returned to the ground they had once held. The park was established as Gettysburg National Military Park in 1895, which helped preserve such monuments for later visitors.
