Baskets of food going home with them mark this 1908 scene of a Salvation Army Christmas dinner in New York, a detail that shows the charity sending people off with supplies as well as feeding them on site. The Salvation Army, founded in London in 1865, ran holiday meals in American cities to help poor families through the winter. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photography service that sold images to newspapers, so it was taken to document a public charity event of its day. The title comes from caption data the agency recorded and has not been independently verified.
