Burlington, Iowa, sits on a bend of the Mississippi River in 1889, and by then its fortunes rested on two things: river traffic and the railroad. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad made the city a major rail center, with its offices and shops drawing workers and families from across the region. Lumber milling and other river-based trades had earlier made Burlington one of the busier ports on the upper Mississippi, and the city's streets and levee still reflected that working waterfront. Residents of the day would have known the town as a railroad and river city, a place where the rhythms of trains and steamboats set the pace of daily life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Burlington, Iowa, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
