Chariton, the county seat of Lucas County in south-central Iowa, was a young town in 1875, roughly a quarter century after its founding. Its economy rested on farming, with corn, hogs, and cattle moving through local grain elevators and stock yards, and on the coal mines that worked the seams under the surrounding hills. Railroad lines had linked the town to larger markets by then, making it a trading center for the farm families who drove in on market days. Residents of the period would have known Chariton for its courthouse square, where county business, merchants, and political debate centered, and for the Grange and other farm organizations that were gaining members across Iowa in the mid-1870s.
