From its hilltop site on Capitol Hill, the Capitol commands the eastern end of the National Mall, and the title suggests a wide prospect of the city spread out below it. Pierre Charles L'Enfant laid out the capital in 1791, with the Capitol as its dominant point, and Congress moved into the unfinished building in 1800. British forces burned the interior during the War of 1812, and the rebuilding that followed shaped the building seen in views like this one. The cast-iron dome, completed in the 1860s, is the feature most worth noticing when comparing a view of this kind with later images of the city.
