Ada L. Howard became the first president of Wellesley College when it opened in 1875, the women's college that Henry Fowle Durant had founded on his estate in the town of Wellesley, about 15 miles west of Boston. The college was built around Lake Waban, and in its early years it was a residential school for women set apart from the mill towns and commercial centers of eastern Massachusetts. Howard led the institution through its first years, when the faculty and students were still establishing its academic routines and its place among the new colleges for women. Wellesley's rural setting, close to the Boston and Albany rail line, made it a quiet campus that drew students from across New England and beyond. Her tenure ended in 1881, and the campus shown here reflects the buildings and grounds that grew out of those formative years.
