Captain Edna Pitkin is named here as a woman in the police force, a rare role in the early twentieth century, when most departments employed women only in limited positions such as matrons or juvenile workers. The title comes from caption information written by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives were later donated to the Library of Congress, and that identification has not been independently verified. The record gives no date, so the picture is best understood within the wider period when women were first pressing for police jobs, and the glass negative format itself points to the years before roll film became common.
