Capt. Paxton Hibben is identified only by name and rank on this glass negative, and the record gives no date, so the identification rests on the Bain News Service's own caption data, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified. Hibben was an American officer and diplomat whose career took him to China and Central America, the kind of posting that drew wire-service attention in the early twentieth century. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds roughly 40,000 negatives from the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with portraits and news pictures from about 1900 to the 1920s. Its glass plates record how press photographers worked in that era, with large cameras, slow exposures and hand-written caption cards.
