A 1974 poster for a New York production of *Twelfth Night* by the National Shakespeare Company, this sheet was designed by David Stone Martin, an American illustrator best known for the loose, expressive ink drawings he made for jazz record covers. Shakespeare wrote the comedy around 1601 or 1602. Its shipwrecked twins, disguises, and mistaken identities in the imaginary realm of Illyria have kept it on stages ever since. Martin's graphic style suited a theatrical notice meant to be taken in quickly by passersby.
