Titled *Allegretto*, a musical marking for a moderately brisk tempo, this photoprint by Arnold Genthe carries caption-card tags for modern dance, masks, and figure studies, suggesting a stylized pose rather than a view of a stage. Genthe made many studies of dancers in the early twentieth century, when modern dance was moving away from ballet conventions toward expressive gesture and simple costume. The record gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the mask reference hints that the performer's face was part of the composition.
