Titled *My Absent Love*, this hand-colored lithograph speaks to the ache of separation, a sentiment that suited the letters and cards people sent across distance in the later 1800s. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it sometime between 1856 and 1907, produced sentimental scenes like this in large numbers, and many were colored by hand, so no two copies look exactly alike. The print is listed as number 4645 in Gale Research's Currier & Ives catalog raisonné. Its theme of longing for a distant sweetheart fits the Valentine's Day custom of exchanging tokens of affection, which had become popular in America by that era.
