Elmer Rice's *Counsellor-at-Law* is the play this poster advertises, and its subject is a lawyer in a busy Manhattan practice, not California, which is the region the record's subject tags point to. The Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that put unemployed theater workers on stage across the country, sponsored the production. Its silkscreen posters, made by WPA artists, were designed to be cheap to print and easy to hang in shop windows and public buildings. The poster's bold flat color reflects that practical, mass-distribution purpose as much as it does the artists' style.
