Tobacco, the subject named here, is a plant native to the Americas that Indigenous peoples grew and used for ceremony and medicine long before European contact. Once it became a commercial crop in the early 1600s, it reshaped the economy of the Chesapeake colonies and much of the South, with cultivation depending heavily on enslaved labor. Pictures in this group show the plant, its harvesting and curing, and the trade that grew around it, so the image is best viewed as part of that longer story of farming, commerce and labor.
