Daguerreotypes like this one date from the earliest years of commercial photography, when a sitter had to hold still for minutes under bright light and the result was a single, mirror-like image on a silvered copper plate. A portrait of an elderly man from 1844 captures that moment when the process was barely five years old, after Louis Daguerre announced it in 1839. The three-quarter pose, with the body turned slightly away from the lens, was a common convention borrowed from painted portraiture of the period. Because each daguerreotype is unique and fragile, surviving examples from these first years are especially valued as records of early photographic practice and of the faces of ordinary people from the 1840s.
