This 1908 chromolithograph is one of the few baseball prints in the collection tied directly to a university, with Cornell's athletes as its subject. Chas W. Beck, Jr. registered the copyright that year, and the artist signed the piece with a pictograph, a small emblem rather than a written name. Chromolithography, which built color from a series of stone or plate impressions, was a popular method for bold advertising and sports imagery in the early 1900s, when college baseball drew sizable crowds. Looking closely, you can see how the flat, saturated color fields were layered to give the figures their punch.
