Nine small scenes of camp life at City Point, on Virginia's James River, share one sheet of olive paper, drawn in pencil and heightened with Chinese white. The subjects read like a tour of a Union supply base in the summer of 1862: sutlers' stands, forage wagons and carts, supply ships, soldiers of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and, unusually, a balloon and a photographer at work. Balloons were a fairly new tool for the Union army, used for observation under the direction of Thaddeus Lowe, so their presence here points to the army's experiments with aerial reconnaissance. The muted olive ground and white highlights give the group a quick, sketchlike quality.
