Few pictures on this board show a balloon being readied on the ice, and this one was taken at Camp Ziegler, the base on Alger Island in Franz Josef Land used by the Ziegler Polar Expedition under Anthony Fiala, which set out in 1903. The expedition's ship, the *America*, was lost in the ice, and the men spent the following winters on the island before rescue in 1905. The expedition carried a balloon, which was meant to help survey the terrain from above. The record's subject tags are old and unverified, so the exact purpose of this scene should be checked against expedition accounts.
