This color print is a commercial label for El Liberal, a cigar brand from the Havana firm Amo, Ortiz y Compañía, with the trade name and city printed directly on the design. Its credit to F. Heppenheimer's Sons of New York points to a common arrangement of the period: Cuban tobacco companies often had their labels and box art printed in the United States, where lithographic and photomechanical work was cheaper and more advanced. Such labels were meant to catch the eye of buyers in shops and on cigar boxes, so they often combine bold lettering with decorative imagery. Dated to about 1920, the piece reflects how tobacco branding and color printing developed together in the early twentieth century.
