Theodore Roosevelt appears here with Hiram Johnson, the California governor who became his running mate after the Progressive Party nominated Roosevelt for president in August 1912. The two men had been allies in the reform wing of the Republican Party, and Johnson gave the ticket strength in his home state. The Progressive campaign split the Republican vote with William Howard Taft, which helped Woodrow Wilson win the presidency that November. The photograph dates from about 1912, though its record does not describe the setting.
