Frances Alda, the New Zealand-born soprano, is the sitter here, listed under her married name as Mme. Gatti-Gasazza, though the correct spelling of her husband's surname is Gatti-Casazza. Alda sang leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for many years, and in 1910 she married Giulio Gatti-Casazza, who was then the company's general manager. The Bain News Service, which made this glass negative, was a busy New York press photo agency that supplied images of performers and public figures to newspapers, so the sitting shows how opera stars were presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
