Ruth St. Denis, the dancer and choreographer, is the person this glass negative records, and the Bain News Service caption card attached to it is the only source naming her. St. Denis helped shape American modern dance in the early twentieth century; she co-founded the Denishawn school with Ted Shawn in 1915 and drew on Asian and Egyptian motifs in works that broke with ballet conventions. The Bain collection came from a news photography agency active in New York from about 1900 to 1915, which photographed theatrical figures for newspapers, so the portrait belongs to that press trade. The date and setting are not recorded, so the negative is best read as a document of her public image during those years.
