Few posters of the period pair a caduceus, the staff entwined by serpents that signals medicine, with a mother and child, but this 1918 color lithograph does exactly that to present the Young Women's Christian Association's message about health. Printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company in Cincinnati and New York and credited to Marie D. Page, it was issued during the First World War, when the nation's attention to maternal and infant welfare was growing. The poster's emphasis on building health from the home outward reflects the association's wider social education work in those years.
