This wood engraving shows Rafael Núñez, the Colombian statesman who was born in Cartagena in 1825 and was president of Colombia during the mid-1880s. Núñez was also a poet and essayist, and he led the Regeneration movement that pulled the country toward a stronger central government and produced the 1886 constitution. The portrait ran in *Harper's Weekly* in 1885, when the magazine relied on wood engravings like this one to bring images of foreign leaders to American readers. The record's birth year and other details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
