The Confederate battle flag, a red field crossed by blue bars dotted with white stars, was never the South's national flag, though Southern troops carried it into battle. The Confederacy first flew the Stars and Bars, a design resembling the U.S. flag, and later adopted newer national designs. Battle flags were vital on smoky fields where soldiers struggled to tell friend from foe. Today these banners carry divided meanings, so pictures of them often raise questions about memory as well as military history.
