The shelflist card associates this print with P.S. Duval & Co., a Philadelphia lithographic firm, but no publication date is recorded, so its exact year of issue is uncertain. It depicts the Emancipation Proclamation, which Abraham Lincoln issued as a preliminary order on September 22, 1862, and then as a final proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free. Printmakers during and after the Civil War produced many images like this for a public eager to see the document's meaning, and such prints often paired the proclamation's text with portraits or symbolic scenes.
