The only identifying detail here is a name, W.B. Fleming, which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. The Library of Congress notes that this title is unverified, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. The Bain agency produced news and portrait photographs in New York in the early twentieth century, and its 5 by 7 inch glass negatives were a standard working medium of that time. Glass gave sharp detail for printing, and the collection as a whole shows how commercial news photography was made before flexible film largely replaced it in the 1920s.
