Dinner Gong is the brand name printed across this apple crate label from the Stadelman Fruit Co., a packer whose lithographed labels were pasted onto wooden crates of fruit shipped out of the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. Crate labels of this kind were built to catch the eye on a crowded produce dock or a grocer's back room, so the printers leaned on bold color, a simple central image, and a brand name that was easy to remember. Labels like this one now serve as a record of how growers marketed their fruit to buyers across the country, and they are a good place to look at the commercial art of the period.
