Early motoring in the Green Mountains is the particular focus here: a touring car carrying sightseers through the hills of southern Vermont, the kind of outing that was still novel when this stereograph was issued. H.C. White Company of North Bennington, a firm that made its name on stereo views of New England scenery, published the card in 1906, the year it was copyrighted. Stereographs like this were viewed through a hand-held viewer to create a three-dimensional scene, and they were a popular way for people far from the roads to see the new automobile in its landscape. The card is worth noticing for how it pairs the machine with the rural setting, a juxtaposition that captured the moment when cars were beginning to open the countryside to leisure travel.
