The credit line "T. House after M. Brown" shows that this engraving reproduces another artist's painting, a common way portraits reached the public before photography. The "Brown" is most likely Mather Brown, the American painter who worked in London and made a well-known likeness of Jefferson in 1786. Engravings such as this carried a statesman's face to readers who would never see the original, and Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president, was a frequent subject. The caption card gives no date for this print, so its exact origin remains uncertain.
