This engraving reproduces Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Thomas Jefferson, with the printed image credited to the engraver H.B. Hall. Stuart was the leading portraitist of the early republic and painted Jefferson more than once, and his likenesses became the standard visual model for the third president. Engravings like this one carried those images into books, newspapers and homes at a time when the painted originals were seen by very few people. The record gives no date for the print, but Hall worked in the nineteenth century, when such reproductions were widely sold.
