Unlike most wartime posters, which rely on pictures to catch the eye, this sheet has no image at all, only a rhyming poem titled "The Red Cross Bloke" credited to a soldier identified as S.L.H. The plain British slang of the title presents the Red Cross helper as an ordinary man, not a distant figure. Issued by the British Red Cross Society in 1915, the color lithograph reflects the society's broader wartime work caring for the wounded and raising support at home. Its text-only design makes it a useful example of how the war was described in verse as well as in pictures.
