Few posters from the war asked ordinary Americans to pick up knitting needles, and this 1918 American Red Cross color lithograph does exactly that under the plain appeal "You can help." Its imagery ties recruiting directly to home knitting, a task that filled the hours of countless volunteers who produced socks, sweaters, and other woolens for servicemen overseas. Posters like this one were part of the wartime effort to turn private kitchens and parlors into sites of national service.
