Rather than a ballooning scene, this sheet holds two title-page designs for the second series of *Sketches by Boz*, Charles Dickens's collection of short pieces on London street life, published in 1836 by John Macrone. Both etchings, hand-colored in watercolor, are signed by George Cruikshank and carry Macrone's imprint. The catalog's subject tags name balloons, quarreling and women, which point to the crowded, comic scenes Cruikshank was asked to capture. The sheet's title, "Seven Dials," refers to the notoriously poor district of central London, and the pairing shows how illustrators framed Dickens's sketches for readers of the period.
