The subject is the sun itself, caught in the low, warm light that gives this print its title. Thomas Moran painted the original in 1907, more than three decades after his Yellowstone paintings helped establish the American West as a subject for landscape art. Brown & Bigelow, a St. Paul firm that sold reproductions of popular paintings as calendars and wall pictures, issued this color halftone around 1910, bringing the image to far more homes than the canvas could reach. The halftone process, which broke the painting into tiny printed dots, made affordable color art common in American households of the period.
