Lichens coat smooth river stones along Iceland's South Coast in this 1972 color view, their greens and ochres standing out against the wet gray and brown of the rock. Lichens grow very slowly in the island's cold, damp climate, so the patterns on such stones can take decades to form. The picture was printed by dye transfer, a color process that yields deep, saturated tones and was prized by fine-art photographers in the 1970s. It appeared in a portfolio of Iceland images published in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1975.
