Thirty-six young women in white, each laying a wreath on the funeral car, set this sketch apart from other views of Lincoln's rail funeral. The handwritten notes worked into the sheet, such as "more figures here if you like" and "lake in the background cant see it," show the artist planning the crowd, the eagles, and the black-and-white draping before the engraving was made. The scene shows the car passing under a decorative arch as Lincoln's body reached Chicago in early May 1865, on its long journey from Washington to Springfield. Harper's Weekly published the drawing on May 20, 1865, giving a national audience an image of how the city's mourning was staged.
