Chicago's growth over fifty years is the subject of this print, which sets a view of the city in 1833 beside one from 1883. The town had been incorporated only a few years earlier, in 1833, and was then a small frontier settlement on Lake Michigan. By 1883 it had grown into one of the largest cities in the country, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1871 and shaped by railroads, stockyards, and grain trade. The record was deposited for copyright in August 1883, and it links the print to the Chicago Varnish Co., though that connection is unverified.
