Among the pictures in this collection, this one stands out for its Ohio setting: a tree planting in Oberlin, the college town in northern Ohio, dated November 5, 1923. It survives as a glass negative, a fragile medium whose coatings often streak or flake with age, and the blemishes visible here reflect that natural deterioration. The National Photo Company made the negative, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. The title comes from notes the studio wrote on the negative and has not been independently verified, so the occasion is best read as the studio's own record.
