This glass negative is titled "Debutante" and dated November 7, 1923, though the title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that worked from roughly 1906 into the 1930s, and its collection records daily life, society events and public figures of the period. Formal debut presentations of young women into society were a common social ritual in the 1920s, which places the subject within that tradition. The record also notes streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are visible traces of the negative's age.
