Uncle Sam, the familiar personification of the national government, is pressed into service here to sell coffee, a pairing that suited a country at war. Coffee was a prized item in Union army rations, and it was also sold widely to civilians, so a grocer's label that borrowed the national figure would have been a familiar sight in the 1860s. Color engravings like this one were used to catch the eye on packaging and advertising, tying an everyday product to the patriotic mood of the time.
