Uncle Sam, the lanky white-goateed figure in top hat and star-spangled coat, anchors this Fourth of July card, with rockets bursting behind him to mark the holiday. Cards like this were mass-produced in the early twentieth century, when color lithography made inexpensive holiday greetings popular, and they were often mailed between family and friends during the summer. Uncle Sam had by then become a familiar national personification, and postcards such as this one spread his image widely, so the card reflects both a personal greeting and a shared patriotic shorthand of the period.
