A chromolithographed poster that casts Uncle Sam as a neighborly adviser, urging Americans to plant gardens and cut what they spent on food. It was produced around 1917, when the country's entry into the First World War had put pressure on food supplies, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture promoted home and victory gardens as a way for households to free up commercial produce for troops and allies. The poster's closing line, "It's Food for Thought," and its offer of a free gardening bulletin from the Department show how the government tried to turn a practical request into a civic duty. The print was made by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, a firm known for color lithography.
