Carabao, the water buffalo that served as the main draft animal across the Philippines, pulled carts like the one in this glass negative from Albay Province on the island of Luzon. The Library of Congress holds it in the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives, which the record marks as unverified, so the exact site and date remain uncertain. Carts such as this were a familiar part of rural life in the Bicol region, where they moved farm goods and people along roads that were often unpaved.
