Philadelphia hosted the Army-Navy football game for much of the early twentieth century, and this 1908 picture places the contest in that city rather than at either academy. The rivalry had begun in 1890, and by the time of this game it had become a fixture of the Thanksgiving holiday, drawing large crowds of cadets, midshipmen, alumni and local fans. Photographs like this one show how the event had grown from a small college match into a major public spectacle.
