The record presents this 1908 Cadillac as the first car produced after General Motors was incorporated that year, a claim the company's public relations department promoted in the 1950s. The picture is a photograph of a drawing rather than of the automobile itself, so it reflects how GM chose to portray its origins nearly half a century later. William C. Durant assembled the company in 1908 around Buick, and Cadillac joined soon after. Corporate histories like this one helped shape the story of an industry that was still young in the early 1900s.
