This photograph shows the first automobile built by Elwood Haynes, an inventor in Kokomo, Indiana, which the record dates tentatively to 1893. Haynes's machine, later called the Pioneer, made its road test on the streets of Kokomo on July 4, 1894, and it is often cited as one of the earliest gasoline-powered automobiles built in the United States. The print itself appears to be a later copy, made decades after the car was built, so its date rests largely on the caption.
