This Bain News Service glass negative is a portrait of Albin Polasek, the Czech-born sculptor who became one of the best-known artists in Chicago. Polasek began as a woodcarver in his homeland before emigrating to the United States, and he later taught sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from about 1900 into the 1930s, made portraits like this one for press use, so the image reflects how the public encountered working artists in that era. The record gives no exact date, so the sitting itself is best understood as part of that wider newspaper practice.
