The record identifies its subject as W.F. McCombs, a name that appears on the glass negative and its caption card, though the Bain News Service identification has not been independently verified. The best-known man with these initials in the period is William F. McCombs, who chaired the Democratic National Committee during the 1912 presidential campaign that carried Woodrow Wilson into office. Bain News Service was a Manhattan wire photo agency whose pictures of politicians, public figures and events were sent to newspapers across the country. Because the negative is undated, the portrait is best read as a document of the agency's early-twentieth-century work with political figures.
