Shibe Park in Philadelphia, shown here around 1913, was the home of the Philadelphia Athletics, who had moved into the park when it opened in 1909. Its steel-and-concrete construction was considered modern for its day, and it helped set the pattern for the larger, more permanent ballparks that replaced the wooden grounds of the 19th century. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures taken in the 1910s, and it captures the park as a working sports venue in the decade when baseball was becoming a major urban spectator attraction.
